Bishnupur (also known as Bishenpur) is a town and a municipal council in Bishnupur District in the state of Manipur, India. Bishnupur became famous during World War II on account of the British war here Major-General Orde Wingate, the founder of the Chindits force, having died in a plane crash near here while flying back from Chindit-held bases in Burma.
As of 2001 India census, Bishnupur had a population of 9704. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Bishnupur has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 82% and female literacy of 62%. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Bishenpur is part of Inner Manipur (Lok Sabha constituency).
